Billy Cootee is a hard-working midfielder/forward who joined the Sydney Swans via pick 42 in the 2025 AFL Draft after a standout two-year stint with Norwood in the SANFL. A mature-age recruit born in December 2002, he arrives at AFL level off the back of a breakout 2025 season in which he won Norwood’s Michael Taylor Medal as club best and fairest, kicked 24 goals from 21 games and finished among the leading vote-getters in the Magarey Medal count.

Originally from Mount Beauty in north-east Victoria, Cootee progressed through the Western Jets program before establishing himself at Essendon’s VFL side, where he captained the Bombers in 2023 and finished third in the best and fairest. His leadership and consistency earned him state recognition with selection in the SANFL representative squad and a key role for Norwood across 2024–25.

On field, Cootee is known for his relentless work rate, repeat efforts and ability to impact both at the contest and on the scoreboard. Operating primarily as a high half-forward who can roll through the midfield, he brings pressure, tackling and a strong running capacity that complement his clean hands and game IQ. Off the field he’s regarded as a team-first character who has embraced every step of his journey – from country Victoria to VFL captaincy, SANFL star and now AFL opportunity – making him a compelling talent and story within the Swans’ emerging list.
